Colors Of The Earth

Slide4In honor of earth day I brought the beautiful and calming colors of our earth together to make a compelling decor for any living area.

Slide3

The cool blue compliments the fresh greens like the clear blue sky on a sunny afternoon making the back drop for lush green grass and rich and abundant green leaves on the trees.  Now picture these same colors in a living area.  Feel the beauty inside as well as out.  It is new, exciting, full of life as well as affordable!! (see where to buy below)

Slide2

The colors of the seas surrounding tropical islands are the most compelling and exquisite in the world.  The color scheme of this living area captures the soothing colors of these seas with multi shades of aqua giving way to depths of space.  The accents of natural wood further enhance the decor with a feeling of a tropical beach.  And who doesn’t want that, especially at these prices. (see where to buy below)

Slide1

The ocean and the earth are what this world is made of.  It’s a beautiful combination.  It is the color of unity.  The colors all of us in this world see everyday in the blue skies and solid earth under our feet.  What could be more beautiful.  You can see the beauty of this color scheme reflected in the decor above.  It takes the ocean’s blue colors and combines them with the natural colors of earth.  (see where to buy below)

The Luggage Trunk Table

Trunks

Luggage Trunks have been carrying people’s clothing and wares for thousands of years. It is amazing they never went out of style. Probably the longest lasting trend ever.   (don’t google it). Today they still look great and have many different uses – my favorite being the coffee table. It adds character and uniqueness to any living space and best of all you can store pillows and throws in it or anything else. If you have a surprise visitor throw the mess in the trunk. Makes for a quick clean up.

The first picture is my inspiration. The trunks were all stacked at a local antique warehouse. It actually looks pretty cool. I was drawn by the appearance as well as the functionality. I could see that look in an apartment where more storage is needed.

Slide1

Actual trunk coffee tables are all offered for sale in the picture above. You can find various looks and costs from many different stores. You may have one already hiding somewhere in your basement or attic. Maybe your parents or grandparents have one hidden away. Or you can buy an antique trunk . Oh the history it will have. Check out this website www.thepiratesliar.com They have amazing restored antique trunks at pretty good prices. See picture below.

FullSizeRenderBunch of Trunks

The trunks all scream history – adventure! Let your living room be part of it all with the trunk coffee table or smaller trunks stacked to serve as accent tables / end tables. And if you need my help making your living room come alive visit my website www.roomdesignrehab.com

GREEN PEACE! GREEN LOVE!

There is a new color peeking its head into home interiors. It’s slowly catching on but will gain incredible speed over the next couple of years. It’s the color of spring – refreshing and new. It’s the color of money. People have rolled in it or would like to. Songs have been written about it. It is now trending in fashion as you can see in Gucci’s latest look.FullSizeRender-22GUCCI

Now I am excited to see it in interiors.Slide1

We are going green with a golden touch. There are two ways to work this trend. Rich vintage traditional with tufted sofa and chairs and accents of gilded gold as in the first photo or more retro modern with very angular lines as below. Either way this interior design trend is fresh and exciting.

French Industrial

Slide1

I like to think I coined the phrase “The French Industrial look”. For some time now I have been gravitating towards each element of this design noticing how the french style softens the cool look of industrial. It’s fresh, it’s modern and I love it.

It has old world charm, it’s cozy and modern – all mixed in one. You get it all cohesively designed in one room!   Beautiful colors of slate blues, grays and creams enhance this look. Rich plush fabrics such as velvet, tufted chairs and tufted sofas give it the old world feel while clean elements of steel, wood and glass give a more industrial feel.

The furniture stores Arhaus and Restoration Hardware have some pieces that work well for this style. They have beautiful furniture. However, you can find pieces of this look in most all furniture stores at many different prices.

Below you will find what I have found to be very nice pieces that fit into this look.

How To Paint a Room (the easy way)

Image 57

One of the best ways to refresh and update your room is to paint it. It covers all sins and will make your room look new again.

And you save so much money doing it yourself! And you can do it! It’s easy! I myself have painted many many rooms. I have learnt through trial and error and I have watched the pros. Learn through my many years of painting and hopefully avoid mistakes that I have had in the beginning.

You just need the right tools, paint, time and patience. The right tools will make your paint job go that much quicker.   These are the must haves for painting your room.

TOOLS:

  1. Paint (gotta have it) – for the walls and trim. Use good paint. It makes a difference.
  2. Roller and roller handle                            Image 3Image
  3. Roller pan w/linerImage 10Image 45
  4. Angle paint brushImage 11
  5. EdgerImage 14
  6. Old Sheet/newspaper  to cover furniture and floor (do not use plastic. Paint drips do not dry and very slippery)
  7. Blue painter’s masking tapeImage 44
  8. 1 ½” – 2” scraperImage 17
  9. Small Paint bucketImage 32

 PREP INSTRUCTIONS:

Are very important. Take about as much time to paint but worth it.

  1. Move all your furniture to middle of room or a few feet from walls and cover with old sheet.
  2. Cover carpets/wood floor with old sheet or newspaper
  3. Take everything off of your wall, curtains, curain rods, artwork, shelves ect…
  4. Remove switch plates and outlet covers
  5. Cover outlets and swtches with blue tape
  6. Tape around door knobs
  7. Tape on floor at baseboard
  8. Tape big window paines. If you have many grilles in your window skip the taping. It will take much too long.
  9. Do not tape over paint! I have tried it many times and each time the paint comes off with the tape. And you don’t need to.
  10. You are ready to Paint!

PAINT THE TRIM FIRST:

Everyone will tell you to paint the walls first but in my experiences working both ways it is much easier to paint trim first. If trim paint happens to get on wall have no fear you will paint over it as long as it’s flat and not thick paint or a drip.

  1. Paint the trim first, windows, baseboard, doorways and moldings.
  2. Use your new best friend for the moment, the angle paint brush.Image 6
  3. Dip angle brush into paint about half way up bristles and then scrape at side of can to eliminate excess. (no drips!)Image 5
  4. Take your time and do not rush this part of the painting.
  5. Hold the brush close to the bristles for more control.
  6. Paint in direction of the wood grain in even semi quick strokes.
  7. Paint the edges after the center of the trim using the pointy side of the brush closest to the edge. If you have wide trim paint the center of trim first with wider straight edge brush then do the edges with the angle brush.
  8. After you do a section or window while paint is still very wet double check your work for paint drips. If you see a paint drip brush it out. You definitely do not want paint drips in your work. Once they dry they are so hard to take out.
  9. When paint has dried do a second coat.
  10. The second coat will go on much faster and will look better with second coat.
  11. If you have grilles in your window and did not tape. You can scrape off excess paint with scraper. But you can wait until entire room is complete.Image 41

PAINT YOUR ROOM:

The easiest part! Really.

Do the edge of the room, around windows and doors first with your new best friend, the edger.

  1. So Important DO NOT get paint on the wheels of the edger. You will get paint all over the place.Image 47
  2. Gently dip the bottom of the edger into the paint and scrape of excess on side of pan.
  3. Use the edger around windows and door trim. Maybe able to use along ceiling moldings and baseboard depending on thickness of the edges. It too narrow will have to use angle brush.Image 53
  4. Then paint the corners of the room with the angle paint brush.
  5. Once the edges are complete time to paint the balance of walls with a roller.
  6. Fill the bottom of the pan with paint.
  7. Dip your roller in the paint and roll it to the top of the pan to remove excess.Image 45
  8. Start painting the walls working in 4 ft sections . roller in zig zag pattern and then up and down.Image 49
  9. Should not have too much or too little paint on the roller.
  10. Always look back on the sections you have completed to make sure there are no drips before the paint is dry. Drips need to be rolled out immediately.
  11. After wall is dry (paint dries quickly!) apply a 2nd

PS Always keep a damp rag close by to wipe up any spills quickly with a damp clean rag!

You Are Finished! Your Room Is on it’s way to be fabulous!
